39th Annual Convention of Philippine Heart Association

Dear Colleagues,

Cardiology as a specialty is only half a century old. However, tremendous innovations were seen only from the 20th century onwards. With the breakthrough in technology and continuous researches in therapy, various treatment strategies are now available. The deluge of innovations has made the practice of Cardiology exciting. However, before we get too engrossed with the dramatic changes, let us appraise how the integration of the new with the conventional has affected existing practice.

In the forthcoming 39th Annual Convention of the PHA, the focus will be on the theme "The Classic and the Contemporary in Cardiovascular Care". The effective confluence of the standard or traditional with the current and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic modes of therapy will be the emphasis. Foreign-based experts have also been invited to share their expertise in the convention.

Simultaneous symposia will be held at the Isla and Garden wings. Members of the Scientific Committee and the various PHA Councils have meticulously selected topics that will explore various aspects of cardiology including novel therapies. Of note will be the invigorated Women's Health council as it highlights its programs and advocacy.

Breakfast meetings will perk you up since delegates will learn and "read with the experts" using the different cardiovascular diagnostic modalities such as electrocardiography, electrophysiology, echocardiography, CT coronary angiography and MRI and vascular ultrasound.

The luncheon sessions will be more exciting with the change in format. On Day 1 high caliber consultants will present their opinions on several controversial issues in Cardiology. Questions like "will coronary revascularization benefit CAD patients with chronic renal failure?" or "will patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery benefit from perioperative beta blockade?" will be posed. Options on "interventional or surgical revascularization versus optimal medical therapy in CAD with mild LV dysfunction" and "rate control versus rhythm control in AF" will be discussed.

The highlights of our research initiatives will be on Day 2's menu. The PHA-Servier Outstanding Research in Cardiolog y, the Dr. F. Tangco Young Investigator's Award, the Case Report and Meta-analysis and the PHA funded researches will be simultaneously presented.

Industry symposia will follow these luncheon sessions.

The Innovations in Imaging and Intervention (i3) sessions will feature advances in Echocardiography and Interventional Cardiology. The updates and recertifying course on ACLS will be provided for interested participants on Days 1-2. For this year we have invited our Nursing partners to hold a 2-day session for their colleagues. Their topics promise to be interesting and relevant to the theme of our meeting.

Of course, we should look forward to the training Cardiology Fellows battle of the wits in the debate and quiz contests.

REGISTRATION

All participants must register to be able to attend the different scientific sessions including the company sponsored satellite meetings, visit exhibits, and participate in the fellowship and other social events. Advance registration is encouraged to avail of discounted fees and help avoid delays at the time of the scientific sessions. (Please use the Advance Registration Form included in this program). Deadline for receipt of Advance Registration is March 30, 2008. If you cannot pre-register by that date, you may do so at Edsa Shangri-La Hotel from May 28 to 30, 2008.

REGISTRATION FEES

HOTEL ACCOMMODATION

A considerable number of rooms has been blocked at the convention site, Edsa Shangri-La Hotel. Rooms are available on a first-come-first-served basis. All hotel bookings should be coursed through the PHA Secretariat.

Above rates are subject to 10 % service charge, 12% VAT and applicable local tax. Advance hotel registration requires 50% deposit. Payment must be made in Philippine currency addressed to the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel.

CANCELLATION

Written cancellations of registration will be accepted until April 15, 2008 with a refund of 50% of the amount paid. No refund will be possible for cancellation received after April 15, 2008.

EXHIBITS

Booth exhibits will be featured during the convention which will provide and update concerning products, medical equipment and research.

SOCIALS AND CEREMONIES

All registered delegates are invited to participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Fellowship Dinner and other social activities.

ATTIRE

Smart casual attire in all social and scientific functions. For the Convocation, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, semi-formal attire is requested.

BADGES

Your badge will be provided in the convention kit. The badge will serve as your pass to the various activities during the convention. Lost badges can be replaced for a fee at the on-site registration area.

THE PHA-DR. FRANCISCO F. TANGCO
YOUNG INVESTIGATOR’S AWARD

This award aims to stimulate local research in cardiology by giving incentives to young researchers and also serves to honor the memory of the late Dr. Francisco F. Tangco who had always helped, guided and stimulated the growth of the medical profession and of cardiology.
The contest is open to all research papers in cardiology presented during the annual PHA meeting. The paper must be original, not previously published, and must have been done locally. To qualify for this award, the senior author
and presentor must not be over 35 years old at the time of the presentation.

PHA MOST OUTSTANDING TRAINING FELLOW IN CARDIOLOGY

This award is open to all Fellows in a formal cardiology training program.
The criteria for judging are :
1. Must have at least three (3) years of residency training in internal medicine and three (3) years training in cardiology in an institution accredited by the Specialty Board of Adult Cardiology.
2. Must have passed the written and practical examinations given by the Philippine College of Cardiology Specialty Board.
3. Must possess outstanding performance during the training program.
4. Must present a scientific paper during the Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting of the Philippine Heart Association.
5. Must be officially nominated by the Chief/Head/Chairman of Cardiology Department/Section of the accredited institution. The nomination must be endorsed by two other members of the consultant staff in cardiology of the institution.
6.Deadline of Nomination: March 31, 2008.

THE PHA-SERVIER AWARD
FOR MOST OUTSTANDING RESEARCH IN CARDIOLOGY

1. Servier Philippines, Inc., through the Philippine Heart Association will fund a PHA-Servier Award for Most Outstanding Research in Cardiology.
2. The purpose of such an award will be to stimulate research work in Cardiology in the Philippine setting by giving due recognition to outstanding research accomplishments done by the fellows of the Philippine Heart Association.
3. Candidates for the award must be:
a. A Filipino citizen.
b. Fellow of the PHA in good standing.
4. The research entry should fulfill the following:
a. Original and not previously published in a scientific journal.
b. Done in the Philippines.
c. Clinically relevant to the local setting.
5. The PHA Scientific and Research Committee shall promulgate the rules of the contest subject to the concurrence of the Board of Directors.
6. The PHA Scientific and Research Committee shall require the following for submission:
a. Five (5) original copies of the fully accomplished research work without the name of author(s) and institution of origin if any.
b. Name of author(s) and institution of origin if any, in a separate sealed envelope to be provided by the PHA. All other considerations pertinent to the evaluation of candidates for the award shall be determined by the PHA Scientific and Research Committee.
7. An independent 5-member Board of Judges shall be chosen by the Scientific and Research Committee with the concurrence of the sponsor, Servier Philippines, Inc.
8. The Board of Judges and the members of the Scientific Research Committee of the PHA are disqualified from the contest.
9. The Medical Project Manager or any designated representative of Servier Philippines, Inc. shall sit with the PHA Scientific and Research Committee during all deliberations as an independent, non-voting observer.
10. The award shall be presented during the Closing Ceremonies of the 39th PHA Annual Convention.
11. The PHA-Servier Awards for Most Outstanding Research in Cardiology shall consist of:
a. A grant of SIXTY THOUSAND PESOS (P60,000.00) to the winning candidate Who will also receiv an appropriate commemoration of the award (plaque, medallion, trophy, etc.)
b. A grant of TWENTY THOUSAND PESOS (P 20,000.00) to the first runnerup.
c. A grant of TEN THOUSAND PESOS (P 10,000.00) to the second runner-up.
12. The sponsor, Servier Philippines, Inc. shall bear all the administrative costs of the award, including cost of committee meetings, plaques, posters, announcements, etc.
13. The PHA shall circularize to all PHA accredited training institutions and local PHA chapters the details of the annual award. Servier Philippines, Inc. may likewise promote the annual award directly to PHA members, training centers and affiliate and component subspecialty societies, provided said direct communications or promotions have prior notation of the PHA.

COLLEGE AWARDS

1. LOYALTY AWARD
This award is given to a fellow or lay member in good standing who has not been a member of the Board of Directors for at least five (5) years who has continuously served the Association in various capacities contributing to the furtherance of its goals like:
a. Attendance to annual conventions and business meetings
b. Participation in the activities of the Association as:
- speaker- committee member- resource person
- lay activities- fund raising campaigns
- or any outstanding activity related to the Association

2. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

This award is given to any physician, scientist or lay person who by individual effort, has made profound contributions to cardiology and/or delivery of health care and/or the Association to achieve its goals.

3. DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD

This award is given to a fellow of the College who, because of his/her demonstrated abilities as outstanding teacher, is considered to have made major contributions to cardiology through the teaching and training of students/trainees at the undergraduate/post doctoral levels. At least two (2) of the following criteria must also fulfilled:
1. Member of the academe for at least ten (10) years of teaching.
2. Active member of cardiology section of a PHA duly accredited institution.
3. Contributor or editor of books and journals in cardiology.
4. Effective teacher in the institution where she/he belongs and endorsed by the institution and/or trainees.

4. DISTINGUISHED SCIENTIST AWARD

This award is given to an individual who:
1. Has contributed significant scientific knowledge in the field of cardiovascular diseases; or
2. Has pioneered in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/innovations in the management of cardiovascular disease; or
3. Has published original scientific papers in reputable local and/or international journals that has contributed to the advances in cardiology.

5. DISTINGUISHED FELLOW AWARD

This award is given to a fellow of the College who has received at least two (2) of the College awards and has qualified for a third. No nomination is required. You may send in your nominees to our Secretariat for final deliberation by the Awards Committee on or before March 30, 2008. Members of the PHA Board of Directors cannot be proponents or nominees for any of the awards. The Awards Committee reserves the right to choose the final nominees.

OBJECTIVES: State main question or study objective(s) or hypothesis.

DESIGN: Describe study design. Indicate if randomized, blinded and if temporal direction, retrospective or prospective.

SETTING: Indicate the study setting (hospital, clinic, community). Also include the level of clinical care (primary or tertiary); private practice or institutional.

PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: State selection procedures, entry criteria and numbers of participants entering and finishing the study.

INTERVENTIONS, IF ANY: Describe the essential features of an intervention/exposure, including the method and duration of administration.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): The primary study outcome measure should be indicated as planned before the data collection began.

RESULTS: Describe measurements that are not evident from the nature of the main results and indicate any blinding. If possible, the results should be accompanied by confidence intervals (most often the 95% interval) and the exact level of statistical significance. For comparative studies, confidence intervals should relate to the differences between groups. Absolute values should be indicated when risk changes or effect sizes are given.

CONCLUSIONS: State only those conclusions of the study that are directly supported by data, along with their clinical application (avoiding generalization) or whether additional study is required before the information should be used in usual clinical settings.

CALL FOR STUDY PROTOCOLS
XIVth World Congress of Echocardiography
and Vascular Ultrasound Research Committee

In line with the preparations for the XIVth World Congress of Echocardiography and Vascular Ultrasound which the PHA, Philippine Society of Echocardiography and Philippine Society of Vascular Medicine will jointly host in 2010, the Committees on Research and Continuing Medical Education of the Philippine Heart Association and the Scientific Program Committee extend an invitation to faculty and medical students to submit research study protocols for the 39th PHA Annual Convention research fora. Submitted research protocols should demonstrate original research focusing on the application and clinical utility of ultrasound in cardiovascular medicine. The PHA will be awarding research grants for the best protocols selected.
At least one author must be a member of PHA or a cardiology fellow in training. Protocol titles must not be more than 100 characters. Completed protocols must include dummy data tables and planned statistical analysis. Submittal form, including the protocol, must be printed, signed by all authors and submitted to PHA by March 31, 2008.
