Updates in VTE management

vteThe American College of Chest Physicians recently updated its treatment guidelines for the management of venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Here are the key changes to the guidelines:

1. Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are suggested over warfarin for initial and long-term treatment of VTE in patients without cancer.

2. Routine use of compression stockings to prevent postthrombotic syndrome in acute DVT is out, based on recent evidence.

3. New recommendations for isolated subsegmental pulmonary embolism treatment were included.
