The Council on Coronary Artery Disease aims to achieve the PHA’s objectives in the field of coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis, with the overall goal of improving the care of patients with coronary artery disease. Presently, it is in the process of developing local practice guidelines and recommendations in the management of angina and myocardial infarction.

The Council on Cardiac Rehabilitation was also one of the original Councils formed. It aims to improve the application of cardiac rehabilitation in the care of post-cardiac surgery and post-myocardial infarction patients, as well as promote awareness on the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation. Today, it implements its programs in joint agreement with the Cardiac Rehabilitation Society of the Philippines.

One of the 10 Councils formed in 1982, the Council on Congenital Heart Disease aims to increase public awareness on congenital heart diseases, improve the care of patients with these conditions, and increase the support to children with congenital heart diseases. It continues to conduct a registry of the different congenital cardiovascular diseases.

One of the original 10 Councils formed in 1982, the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery presently conducts all its activities in collaboration with the Philippine Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons. It aims to increase the nation’s awareness on cardiac surgery through media campaigns, education programs and medical missions. It continues to pursue a nationwide registry on cardiac surgery and collaborative multi-center cardiac surgery researches.

Chair 2020 - 2023: Avenilo L. Aventura, Jr., MD


With a goal set to deliver community-oriented programs to improve the care, and prevent and decrease morbidity associated with rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, the Council on Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease was created in 1982.
Initial objectives included increasing public awareness on the prevention of streptococcal infection and rheumatic fever.

At present, the Council is involved in the preventive, curative and rehabilitation aspects of the patient with rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. It continually promotes strategies on primary prophylaxis through proper education of the diagnosis and prevention of rheumatic fever, and in cooperation with the RF/RHD Foundation and the Department of Health, holds provision of free penicillin treatments to indigent rheumatic heart disease patients.
