The PHA Council on Echocardiography, led by Chair Dr. Joyce Jumangit, in coordination with the Philippine Society of Echocardiography, held an INTERHOSPITAL ECHO SYMPOSIUM last January 15, 2009, at Annabel’s Restaurant in Quezon City. Two interesting echo cases were presented by fellows in training from St Lukes Medical Center and Philippine General Hospital. The first case, entitled “Eyeball in the Heart”, centered on an inferior vena cava and right atrial mass, and was presented by Dr. Marco Antolin, of St Lukes. Dr. Allan Gumatay of UP-PGH, presented the 2nd case entitled “Cardiac Babushka: A case of an RV Mass”. Dr. Milagros Yamamoto of UST Hospital served as reactor. The activity was attended by 85 fellows in training from all the cardiology training institutions. Members of the Council on Echocardiography and the Philippine Society of Echocardiography also attended the activities to react, to learn and to teach the trainees. Sanofi Aventis served as sponsor.
ThePHA Council on Stroke and Peripheral Vascular Disease, conducted its yearly Research Protocol on Vascular Disease Contest, last January 12, 2009, at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas. Fellows from the different accredited cardiology training institutions presentedprotocols on vascular diseases. The winners were: Dr. Rex Vener Palma, of St Lukes Medical Center, 1st place for his protocol, Prevalence of Thrombophilic Genes Among Filipino Patients with Deep Vein Thrombosis in St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Dr. Ryan Padua, of Makati Medical Center, won 2nd place, for his paper, Use of augmentation index via digital photoplethysmography in detecting early left ventricular dysfunction among hypertensive patients.
Dr. Darwin Misa, of Philippine Heart Center, won 3rd place, for his work, Pedal Plantarflexion: A Clinic-based Assessment of Peripheral Arterial Disease Among Elderly Diabetics.
Other presenters were Dr. Rainier Polyapoy, of Philippine General Hospital, who presented his protocol, Common Carotid Artery-Intima Media Thickness of Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting; Dr. Maureen Valentin, of UST Hospital, who presented The Relationship Between Endothelial Dysfunction and Left Ventricular Diastolic Function Among Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2; and Dr.
Ian Herbert Estanislao, of Philippine General Hospital, discussing his work, Intima Media Thickness of PGH Employees Using the Electronic Calliper During Routine Annual Checkup.
Judges for the event were Drs. Richard To, Maribeth delos Santos, and Marie Magno. Dr. Melissa Bernardo served as moderator.
Meanwhile, an INTERACTIVE CASE PRESENTATION was held by the PHA Continuing Education Program Subcommittee on Cardiofellows-in-training last January 27, 2009, at the Therapharma Conference Room. Dr. Marianne Collado of the Philippine Heart Center discussed her interesting case of Aortic Chimera. Reactors were Drs. Wilfred Dee, Aquileo Rico, and Maribeth delos Santos. Dr. Elaine Alajar served as moderator. The event was attended by 62 fellows and consultants.
